Imagine flowing from one position to the next as you play your guitar without thinking. Foresee the people around you amazed by the graceful movement of your hand as it travels up and down the fretboard. Hard to believe? Sounds too good to be true? Yet, we've all seen it, whether on television or live...we've seen rock stars who shred the entire fretboard, jazz guitarists who sail across those same frets with graceful finesse, and/or the young artists who weave music up and down the neck as if they have the insight of someone twice their age. These performances debunk any perceived fretboard limitations you may have; and, today, it's YOUR turn to discover how to do it, too! What Led to The Fretboard Solution For years I struggled to get my students to memorize the fretboard. Why? Because I was teaching the same methods that I was taught growing up. During my early career as an instructor, I came to realize that there needed to be a new way of thinking about scales. Through trial and error, I was able to change my perspective of the fretboard as it began to reveal itself in a way that not only improved my playing, but made it easier to teach in the studio as well. Talk about remarkable results! Students who had just taken up guitar were moving up and down the neck in a matter of weeks, not years; and, older students who had been playing for a while were—all of a sudden—able to master the fretboard in only one lesson! Simple and Effective With The Fretboard Solution, you will learn about a system I call the pivot method. This concept exposes how easy it actually is to learn scales. In fact, this unique approach is so simple that you will wonder why you hadn’t noticed it earlier. Then it’s a matter of practicing seven brief exercises to help you put this method into practice. You read this right, only seven quick exercises to give you what you have always wanted—complete control and confidence in your playing. You’ve Waited Long Enough! Join the countless guitarists who are discovering their true potential with The Fretboard Solution! Say YES to • Better understanding of the guitar fretboard • The secret that unlocks the mystery of scales • Having greater confidence in your playing • Gaining skills and techniques that you can use for a lifetime And, if that’s not enough… with The Fretboard Solution, you’ll be able to achieve all of this with just 2 simple finger patterns! If you’re thinking, “Maybe I should,” please do! Whether new to playing scales, or an experienced player with a desire to take it to the next level, the answer—the pivot method—is in this book, The Fretboard Solution.

I went through this little 56 page book in one sitting. I've been grappling with the guitar for longer than I care to admit, and I have many books with reams of scale patterns in them...it could be laziness, or maybe a learning deficiency, but none of it ever 'sticks' no matter how much I practice them. Many guitarists deal with this challenge successfully, but for me, simplicity is preferred.

The author basically presents two one-octave scale patterns, and then demonstrates how those patterns can be maneuvered around the fretboard, the 'pivot' point being the root note. There isn't really anything fancy about it, and you could probably map it out for yourself. The take home message, for me anyway, is that if you know where the root note is in relation to the scale pattern you're using, then you can move that pattern, or parts of it, around the fretboard. These different patterns look less 'different' once you also take into account the half-step shift when approaching the second string. It makes drilling those larger patterns haphazardly seem ineffectual.

I think that any new guitarist beginning to delve into the snake pit of scale practice should take a look at The Fretboard Solution first, if for no other reason, to become more closely acquainted with the smaller pathways that make up the CAGED patterns and "speed scales" that are now ubiquitous in the guitar literature. It can also be helpful for guitarists who have been bumping around in the dark for a bit, and not really making the connection for way too long. I like the simplicity of it, and sometimes you need a fresh perspective to move forward.

One thing that the author doesn't mention, which I think may also be useful, is to locate the root note patterns on the fretboard first. Barrett Tagliarino introduced me to this idea in his Guitar Fretboard Workbook. Check out the free preview of Barrett's book on Amazon, it's in there.

Adam uses two basic scale patterns with the root note at or near the end of the pattern, but you can also use the components of three-note-per-string scale pattens to move around as well, with the root as a guidepost. In his article "Skeleton Key: Unlocking The Modes with the Mystical Major-Scale Diagram", Richard Lloyd describes how the double-whole-step pattern across three consecutive strings, next to the half-step/whole-step pattern on two consecutive strings, followed by the whole-step/half-step pattern on two strings (you'd need to have an imaginary string in there somewhere) stacks up to allow one to play through all the modes in all positions. It's a worthwhile read, and you can map it out yourself.

At any rate, I would recommend the book, exploring these ideas, and taking your time in doing so.

The Fretboard Solution Adam Baxley 9781519654977 Books Reviews

Great resource. This book really helps you tie the entire fretboard together in an easy to understand way. I can now run scales up and down the fretboard with ease. A must have for guitarists of all levels.
This is fantastic. The book is very clearly written and all the diagrams of the scales were easy to understand. Its broken down so anyone can learn quickly and easily without leaving any gaps in their knowedge. Advanced players to newbies will get something out of this and open new ways of approaching and playing guitar.
First off, this book is very clean and easy to understand. The scale charts are all very well done and the explanations are clear and concise. As for content, it may take a couple readings to fully understand, but once everything clicks you will be left with a very simple way to memorize and play most any scale you want on guitar. What this book offers is more than just a technique, but instead a new way to think of scales. I found this book very helpful.
I have been playing guitar and studying music theory for over 20 years. I just love it.
I never quite understood why we make thing so complicated.
This book illustrates the PIVOT method, incredibly simple and effective.
It manages to get you out of the stagnant CAGED system and allows you to identify which note you are on in a matters of ... reading the first few pages.
I know musicians (at least one quite well) who have struggled with this all their lives.
Again, so incredibly simple and yet so effective.
Mr. Baxley is also the author of "Emotional Pitch, unraveling the art of music theory". After reading this ... I really would like to get a copy of it.
Good job Mr. Baxley
